THE 1986 South African Teachers Training Colleges Sports Association (SATTCSA) team which included Rubin Steyn (800m), Martin Saayman (1500m and 5000m), Gawa Moyce (discus and shot put), Willem Jansen (long jump), Calvin de Kock (javelin), Edward Mulder (race walking), Clement du Plessis (100m and 200m) and Mohammed Dawood (400m and 800m) who participated at the second SAAAB Prestige Track and Field meeting. The coach, on the far left, is Andy Daniels and personal coach to Nazeem Smith.
Smith was the sprint record holder at SA colleges and SA club level. Moyce was the shot put and discus record-holder and Saayman was the SA colleges over the 1500m and 5000m. Other Western Province and SA Board athletes included Jansen, Dawood and Steyn.
The last SA Colleges meeting was held in March 1986 at the Green Point Track.
Down the years, the SATTCSA team included star athletes such as Ian Rutgers, Andy James, Hennie Moses and Suezette Arendse.
In previous years, the Hewat college athletes competed against the athletes of the Western Province Senior Schools Sports Union (WPSSSU), but this had stopped in 1982 when Hewat Training College withdrew from the WPSSSU to compete in a colleges’ only meeting. For a small college, with a small pool of athletes, Hewat were good enough to compete in the A Section of athletics in senior schools.
