ANITA WITBOOI of Macassar High School and the Stellenbosch Amateur Athletics club competed at the highest level in athletics during the 1980s. She represented both the WP senior schools and clubs, the SA senior schools and clubs. In addition, Anita represented the SA senior schools at netball.

She was a record holder in both the 800m and 1500m. Anita competed against the likes of champion athletes Valda Booysen, Tessa Hefele, Mercia Misroll, Sharon Klein and Roslyn Fisher. All of these athletes held records at various stages of their athletics careers and competed at the highest level of athletics during apartheid.

At club level, these athletes competed against each other week in and week and out. Booysen (married Ford) ultimately held the SAAAB records in the 800m and 1500m. Witbooi and Booysen had some famous duels at the track at the University of the Western Cape. Needless, to say, these athletes were also cross country and road runners.
