Jantjie proves his class in the 800m
JANTJIE Marthinus was also the two times SA 800m champion by the time “sports unity” arrived in 1992. This is not counting in his SA titles under Sacos from 1983! He was the undisputed 800m champion in 1990 and 1991 in South Africa. If there was any “unity”, then it was the fact that he had unified the 800m title under his name. No one could touch him in that period. He had brought the time of 1:48,6 right down to 1:46,35. In my book, he was a workmanlike Ivan Lendl, tough as nails or is it as tough as teak.
He had broken the 800m record several times. Marthinus also represented Boland senior schools in athletics.
He held the Sacos 800m record up until the time of unity and he was also a member of the SAAAB 4X400m relay team who held the record.
Jantjie Marthinus was several times the Elsie’s River mile road race champion.
