OWEN Machelm of Macassar High, representing the South African Senior Schools Sports Association, eases in to win the men’s SAAAB cross-country championships at Zeekoevlei in the late 1980s.

He, too, was a champion athlete. In 1988, while still a schoolboy at Macassar, he held the WPSSSU 5000m record in a time of 14 mins 43,8 seconds. His SASSSA record over the same distance was 14 min 31,0 secs.

Machelm was also a Wembley 15km road race champion. He is, for sure, an athlete for all seasons.

His teammate, in all three tiers of athletics, Anita Witbooi of Macassar was a formidable middle distance athlete. She also represented WP and SA in netball.
