JOHN September of the Trafalgar Amateur Athletics Club was one such athlete who competed all-year-round in athletics. ie. on the track, road and in cross-country races.
He started his athletics career with the Hanover Park-based Vikings Amateur Athletics Club.
September’s career could not have started at a better time.
He had taken over the mantle in long distance racing from the great Hennie Moses of Ceres (Bellville Training College) in the 5000m and 10 000m.
In 1986, on the clay track of the Dal Josofat Stadium in Paarl, South Africa, September became the SAAAB 10 000m champion.
During this time Joseph Gysman, Owen Machelm and Martin Saayman had become some of his fiercest rivals.
He gained WP and SA colours on the track, road and in cross country.
September ended his career on the road, running well into his forties.
