Twins cause double trouble in javelin

BONTEHEUWEL has had more than its fair share of athletes, including high jumper Tania Brown, sprinters Henry Coetzee, Herman Gibbs, Nazeem Moos and field event athletes and twins Nathan and Jonathan de Kock.

Jonathan de Kock of Bonteheuwel High held the boys under 17 WPSSSU javelin record of 61,65m in 1981.

His twin brother held the boys open WPSSSU javelin record of 58,36m in 1984. Nathan was also the SASSSA record-holder with a distance of 58,28 set in 1984.

See the packed stadium in the background in the high jump photograph. Eight schools of about 1 000 pupils each hold a sectional athletics meeting. There have been up to 10 sectional meetings climaxing in the Champion of Champions Athletics meeting where only the best, on qualification, are allowed compete.
